Kamran Ince’s Hammers and Whistlers Premieres at Present Music in Milwaukee

On November 17, Present Music premieres Kamran Ince’s Hammers and Whistlers, a work commissioned for Present Music’s Thanksgiving concerts. Scored for children’s choir, women’s choir, an ensemble of fifteen players and a string orchestra, and with original text by Izzeddin Calislar, Hammers and Whistlers focuses on the wonderment of creation. Kamran Ince explains:

Hammers and Whistlers is about the act of creating and the act of experiencing, and sharing, the creations. We, ourselves, must create. After all, everything we are or encounter has been created… Life is wonderful when you create something, when you leave something behind, even if it is just unique to that moment.”

This will not be the first time Kamran Ince and Present Music have created music together. In 2004, Present Music released an album of works by Ince, including In White, Flight Box, In Memoriam:8/17/99, MKG Variations and Turqoise. The premiere of Hammers and Whistlers will be conducted by Kevin Stalheim on November 17 at St. John’s Cathedral in Milwaukee, with a second performance on November 19.

Upcoming major commissions for Ince include a movement in renowned men’s chorus Chanticleer’s collaborative mass project and Judgement of Midas, an opera for the 100th year of Sardis/Lydia excavations, sponsored by Harvard University.
