New CD of Valentin Silvestrov's Chamber Music Released on KOCH Featuring World Premiere Recording of Drama
This month KOCH International Classics releases Drama, a recording of selected chamber works by Valentin Silvestrov. The recording consists of Silvestrov's Post scriptum for violin and piano; Epitaphium for violin or cello and piano; and the world premiere recording of his piano trio Drama. Pianist Jenny Lin, violinist Cornelius Dufallo, and cellist Yves Dharamraj perform on the KOCH disc. These same works will be presented in concert on December 8 at New York's Ukrainian Institute to celebrate the new release.
Silvestrov is considered one of the leading representatives of the "Kiev avant-garde." After dispensing with compositional devices of the avant-garde, he focused on creating a unique style of his own known as "metamusic" or metaphorical music, intent on obscuring the passing of time. Silvestrov's piano trio Drama marks this turning point in his compositional style.
In the summer of 2007, ECM Classics released his Symphony No. 6, and the BBC Radio 3's Andrew McGregor had this to say about the recording:
If you haven't yet encountered the music of Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov, then it's time you did. Silvestrov has his own fully-saturated music language, plus a post-Mahlerian sense of scale and all-encompassing humanity. It feels simple, yet it obviously isn't; it's profoundly beautiful, timeless, and unforgettable.
